• NRaas has a number of Mods including Portrait Panel which expands how many thumbnails display in the game's portrait panel and awsome has an automated school assignment override in it's config file that fixes school assignments when enabled.I use those myself as awseom's UI change also stops school overcrowding and routing fails of all types that happen in the game especially when used with the NRaas Mods and playing with NRaas taking over story progression though I configured mine to TS2 style story progression.

  The school fix is a Core Mod function and has nothing to do with the UI. Neither does PortraitPanel really, at least not the way in which the OP meant it.
  I don't know of mods that do any of these things, but certainly the UI ones exist somewhere because I've seen them in action or else these players are rolling their own UI changes. A better place to ask might be the Where Can I Find (WCIF) section for TS3 on ModTheSims.

• I've never seen a mod for the portraits that you describe or a default replacement for the laundry pile.
  A couple of UI mods @ MTS and a guide on how to do it yourself if you're willing to do it. I personally use the Gray UI mod (V2.3)

  Thanks - I have seen that recolor and have done a lot of research on doing it yourself. I was hoping there was something buried out there other than just a recolor but doesn’t seem like it! I do have my eye on the in progress white recolor by alverdine and will most likely use that when it’s out.
  
• I've seen a few UI recolors on MTS and other things that change things in the UI like adding functions to the relationship panel and the portait panel to increase the portraits showing and awsome has the assignment override which makes the career panel show a message of no schools in town instead of that the child is an elementary school student even though they just aged up.
