I've seen a few posts on making mods, but quite a few players still seem unaware of how to install them outside of using Aslain's excellent mod installer. Like in World of Tanks, World of Warships features a mod folder for you to place modded game files without needing to replace the actual game files.

If you've downloaded a mod (or made one of your own), use these steps to figure out where to put the modded files and have them work, without replacing the original (and risk losing files or breaking something somewhere).

1. Figure out where in the res folder the original file is. For instance, if you want to mod a flag, the flag files are located in (your World of Warships folder)rescontentgameplaycommonflags

2. Now look at your World of Warships folder. Next to the res folder, there should be a folder named res_mods. Inside it should be a bunch of folders named for the various game versions.

3. Look for the folder that corresponds to the current game version (Right now, its 0.4.1).

4. Create a bunch of folders that mirror exactly what is found in the res folder for the mod you want to install. So, for example, if you want to install a flag mod, place the modded flag files into res_mods<game version>contentgameplaycommonflags, or if you want to mod the login video, place the modded video into res_mods<game version>guivideo

5. Whenever the game updates, it will create a new folder named after the current game version. Just drag your mod files from the old mod folder to the new one after every update.

To get the mods to work, you'll also need to edit the paths.xml file in the main folder. Some modders will provide the paths.xml for you to overwrite with, but in case that doesn't happen, just make sure paths.xml reads like this

Replace '(Version of the game)' with the current game version. Currently, it's 0.4.1

By installing the mods in the res_mods folder rather than replacing files in the game folder, this should help reduce the risk of losing important files, or accidentally breaking your game somewhere.
